What is nail fungus?

A fungal infection in your toenails is caused by an overgrowth of fungal organisms that get under, inside, or on top of your nail. Also known as onychomycosis, this infection can develop from fungus you come in contact with or that occur on the surface of your skin, such as yeast and mold.

When your nail becomes infected, a fungal infection can spread to your other toes and the skin. Fungal infections on the skin are called athlete’s foot. If you have athlete’s foot, it can spread to your nails.

Who is at risk of nail fungus?

Nail fungus is a common condition that can affect anyone of any age, but several factors increase your risk, including:

  • Walking barefoot in locker rooms or pools
  • Circulatory problems or diabetes
  • A weakened immune system
  • Feet that are damp or moist for extended periods
  • Injury to the nail or surrounding skin

Your risk of nail fungus also increases as you age because your nails become more brittle and dry. These changes in your nails leave them more vulnerable to infection.

What are the symptoms of nail fungus?

Initial symptoms of nail fungus are subtle. Once symptoms become more pronounced, they may affect part of your nail, several nails, and the surrounding skin.

Nail fungus symptoms typically include:

  • Painful or thickened nails
  • Discolored or yellowed nails
  • Brittle, ragged, or distorted nails
  • Yellow or white spots or streaks on the nail
Ridges or lines underneath the nail

It’s also common to experience a faint and unpleasant odor in the infected area.

How is nail fungus treated?

There are several methods available to treat nail fungus, including topical medications and oral antifungal medications. At ZapNails, Dr. Maislos uses the most effective treatment available: the PinPointe™ FootLaser® system. This innovative system is the first FDA-cleared laser for treating nail fungus.

This advanced laser technology doesn’t require anesthesia because it’s completely painless. There are no risks associated with your nail fungus treatment, and its precise design only targets your fungal infection without damaging your surrounding skin and tissue.

Vino Med Spa nail technicians are trained in podiatric medicine and will recommend you to a podiatrist if needed.
